Ideologies are shiny but they seldom provide solutions to complex problems. Both the left and the right have offered their own version of a “silver bullet”. Partisan and designed to protect their political bases they do little to solve the financial hole we find ourselves in. It’s absolutely imperative that we demand that the discussion be reasoned and factually based.

Things in nature move in very complicated ways. Watch a butterfly fly outside your window or leaves blow in the wind. Observe where we shop, our favorite restaurant, or the internet sites where we spend our time. They all tend to change over time. Take your own ‘random walk’. As you walk down the street flip a coin at every intersection and turn left or right depending if it is heads or tails. Given time you will always come home.

Costa's view is that increasingly complex issues cause us to rely on ideology and belief in an attempt to solve the major issues we face. This results in quick fixes versus sustainable solutions. It's interesting that the 61 pages of notes and references at the end of her book provide testimony to her view that it's only through a combination of fact and belief that we can effectively articulate our positions.
Tim Brown's new book "Change by Design: How Design Thinking Transforms Organizations and Inspires Innovation" is a great book to read in combination with Costa's book.
He describes in detail the process of 'design thinking' and relates how it can be expanded to solve problems in a variety of areas. Changing the processes we use may be something we all need to consider.
